Submission + - Euler's Partion Function Theory Finished (plos.org)

universegeek writes: Mathematician Ken Ono, from Emory, has solved a 250 year old problem, how to exactly and explicitly generate partition numbers. Ono and colleagues were able to finally do this by realizing that the pattern of partition numbers is fractal. This pattern allowed them to find a finite, algebraic formula, which is like striking oil in mathematics.

Submission + - Tevatron to Shut Down at end of 2011 (plos.org) 1

universegeek writes: It appears Fermilab's Tevatron will be shutting down by the end of 2011. Rumors confirmed today at the ISP220 conference say that the DOE denied further funding for the project. Looks like the LHC is our only hope in the hunt for the Higgs after all.
