No, the analogy is wrong.
It compares to the average user buying components for his car, and then putting it together. In which case, he IS responsible for compatibility.
Purchasing a car is akin to purchasing a preconfigured computer from dell or whomever. Their hardware is compatible, and verified (i'd imagine).
