There's no comma splice here. The final two sentences are joined by the conjuction 'and' plus a comma. The author does show a propensity for using serial commas [wikipedia.org], though most authorities will agree that this is correct usage, if not more logical. ^_^I don't see the grammatical error in the bolded text. There is a comma splice [wikipedia.org], though. Remember: if the two phrases sound good alone, use a period or a semicolon!
