Also PeppermintOS, Exe GNU/Linux, Refracta (all Devan based), antiX, MX (defaults to sysvinit but systemd can be selected at boot), Void and Alpine.

MX Linux (Debian based) allows you to select systemd or sysVinit at boot time (default is sysVinit).

Using a separate box that I control (e.g. mini PC/laptop/Raspberry Pi running Kodi or similar) connected to the TV via HDMI only.

This is one reason (apart from the obvious privacy concerns) that I would never allow a smart TV to access the internet.
