Comment "Undo Send" Is Just "Delay Send" (Score 1) 29

Some of the stupidest IT support conversations I've ever had have been with people who thought they could "undo" a mistakenly sent email because someone once sold them on an "Undo Send" option that was just a "Delay Send" option for X minutes. Try telling someone "No, you definitely sent that email" when they think, "No, if you'd let me use Outlook, I could summon that email back and it would disappear." I'm sure this idiotic "feature" will recur again and again as long as we have email and will inspire infinite fresh gems of magical thinking.

I wouldn't want Representative Pearce's commute, and his huge district means long travel hours even when back home with his constituents. However, making Congress even less collegial than it's become sounds like a bad idea. There is a world of difference between negotiating on the floor of the House versus a 435-thumbnail Google Hangout. The effectiveness of your political representatives depends on them forming alliances, winning over opponents, remembering the names of their colleagues' kids, and generally treating each other like human beings. These relationships are still stronger when developed face-to-face, and probably always will be. If I disliked my representative's politics, maybe I'd like her to laze around in the district. But I strongly support her, and I'm glad she spends long days in Washington, DC doing the hard work that being effective requires.

Geek Squad Sends Cease-and-Desist Letter To God Squad 357

An anonymous reader writes "A Wisconsin priest has God on his car but Best Buy's lawyers on his back. Father Luke Strand at the Holy Family Parish in Fond Du Lac says he has received a cease-and-desist letter from the electronics retailer. From the article: 'At issue is Strand's black Volkswagen Beetle with door stickers bearing the name "God Squad" in a logo similar to that of Best Buy's Geek Squad, a group of electronics troubleshooters. Strand told the Fond du Lac Reporter that the car is a creative way to spur discussion and bring his faith to others. Best Buy Co. tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that it appreciates what Strand is trying to do, but it's bad precedent to let groups violate its trademarks.'"

Adobe (Temporarily?) Kills 64-Bit Flash For Linux 272

An anonymous reader writes "It seems that with the release of the 10.1 security patches, Adobe has, at least temporarily, killed 64-bit Flash for Linux. The statement says: 'The Flash Player 10.1 64-bit Linux beta is closed. We remain committed to delivering 64-bit support in a future release of Flash Player. No further information is available at this time. Please feel free to continue your discussions on the Flash Player 10.1 desktop forums.' The 64-bit forum has been set to read-only."

Dead Pigs Used To Investigate Ocean's "Dead Zones" 106

timothy writes "As places to study what happens to corpses, the Atlantic Ocean is both much larger and much more specialized than the famous 'body farm' in Knoxville, TN. But for all kinds of good reasons, sending human bodies into Davy Jones' locker just to see where they float and how they bloat is unpopular. Pigs don't pay taxes, and more importantly, they don't vote. So Canadian scientists have taken to using them as human-body proxies, to study what happens when creatures of similar size and hairlessness (aka, us) end up 86ed and in the drink."

Comment Why Don't They Leave the Shuttles Up There, Too? (Score 5, Interesting) 81

I don't get why we're not planning to dock the shuttles to the ISS and leave them up there, too, with their useful engines, robotic arms, and so forth. The space museums would be sad, but someone would undoubtably think up some cool things that could be accomplished with them up there.
