Submission + - Yahoo loses $2.7B in mysterious Mexican yellow pages lawsuit

An anonymous reader writes: CNN reports that a Mexico City court has ordered Yahoo to pay $2.7 billion to Worldwide Directories and Ideas Interactivas. The classified directory publisher sued Yahoo, claiming various losses and breaches involving "contracts related to a yellow pages listings service." Yahoo announced its intention to appeal but is saying little else about the case.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, up to 80% of scam victims are over 65. One explanation may lie in a brain region that serves as a built-in crook detector. Called the anterior insula, this structure—which fires up in response to the face of an unsavory character—is less active in older people, possibly making them less cagey than younger folks, a new study finds.

kai_hiwatari writes "Around two week ago when Adafruit announced a bounty for developing an open-source driver for the Kinect, Microsoft made it clear that they didn't condone it. Now Microsoft seems to have realized the potential of their device and has made a U-turn. Alex Kipman, Xbox Director of Incubation, now says that they left the Kinect open by design. Kipman said, 'What has happened is someone wrote an open-source driver for PCs that essentially opens the USB connection, which we didn't protect, by design, and reads the inputs from the sensor.'"

I realized a little while ago that only techies like us pay attention to the "completed X of Y items...", and get aggravated over the unfinished state of the web page. As long as the page appears to be finished loading, then it *is* finished loading as far 95% of people are concerned. And this isn't so bad - it means the extra time to load analytics doesn't really matter.

I'm not buying it. I know personally that Microsoft keeps patents as an arsenal for negotiations with small companies. I.e., if you continue such-and-such development, we'll challenge every patent you've got; we'll get some of them thrown out, and bankrupt you in the process. (I'm a 3rd year law student; one of my best friends is a patent agent in a firm that represents MS and tells me these stories about "business as usual".)
