You are exactly right. I've had this same scenario, messages, and results 4 times in the last six months alone. That is only the "we're having trouble" cases after "it's out for delivery" messages. I don't even count the number of times they completely missed their 2-days promise. And I'm in the suburbs of a large metro area where Amazon vans are in the neighborhood multiple times a day, not some remote country location.

Methinks they'll do what companies often do when forced by do-good politicians to sell below their usual prices -- make it up from the unsubsidized customers by increasing their prices or tacking on a special fee with a feel-good name. They don't have to make a profit on every account so long as the aggregate math works out.
