This is the best defense of Catcher in the Rye as an "important" book that I've ever read.

I also hated reading it (on my own as a late teen, not an assignment), and sympathized with my own kids when it was inflicted upon them.

I can buy a real copy of "A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer"
