Unfortunately, pretty easily. Companies that let themselves get behind the technology curve can't attract the skills to run a mainframe. They have to dumb down to simpler (but more expensive in the long run) machines.
That may change if the Linux/autonomous computing initiatives stop being just ad-ware.
