I remember multiple waves of the emulation 'community' bearing down on him because he was so damned particular. The discourse was always hateful yet he continued to do things his way and changed things for the better from a programming perspective in that community.
I remember several different times simply sending an email that said thank you for your hard work. Never expected an response, never got one. It's a shame more people didn't do the same. Maybe it could have changed things. Maybe not.
How TF does a community like KiwiFarms exist? I'd never heard of it before today. I weep for humanity.
I don't know that I even have a point with this comment. I'm just dumbfounded.
I spent 15 years in cable. There definitely are hardware limitations. The split between forward and reverse could be raised to allow for more upstream bandwidth. The problem with this is it can possibly lead to a large swath of existing DOCSIS3.0 and older hardware that might not play nice. Comcast is and has been toying with better and more aggressive signal multiplexing techniques. Again the problem there is that those technique allow for less noise in the signal. That goes back to the upstream ingress problem I hinted at in my OP.
HFC networks will always be inefficient due to noise. If all traffic were one-way, cable networks would be fine. Once you allow people to send stuff back on a shared channel, it gets poor quickly.
There is an inherent limitation in HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coax) networks. Most companies allocate 6-24MHz total for Upstream bandwidth.
Downstream bandwidth is naturally much higher as noticed in the speeds most cablecos are marketing.
The nature of upstream bandwidth in a RF network means that one guy with crappy wiring mucks things up for everyone in the fiber node.
This makes expansion of the return path in a cable network difficult since so much time and money goes to maintenance things like sweep, balance, and ingress mitigation.
None of this excuses the cable companies. They should have had fiber to the premises long ago.
The infrastructure in cable just plain doesn't exist.
The only downside to most of the DIY antenna builds out there is they don't do much for the VHF spectrum. In this market there are 4 major channels that are in VHF. Worse, Philly ABC6 is still on VHF6, right in the low band of VHF. Pulling that channel in without a full size VHF capable antenna is difficult depending on location. That being said, I've always wanted to try making a DIY 8-bay antenna in the mold of the Channel Master 4228.
Stellar Labs make some stupidly cheap high gain design Yagi Antennas, but the materials are a bit on the flimsy side.
This is where installing a proper high-quality outdoor antenna is useful. Even outside of major metros, you can at least get SOME live tv for the cost of the antenna and/or the installation. In south-central Pennsylvania, with a rotatable antenna I can receive local broadcasts from Harrisburg PA, Baltimore MD, and one from DC. Rural areas require more expensive and larger gear, but it can still be done in many places. Money well spent if you need broadcast TV.
Goose as a verb (idiom) means to play a practical joke upon someone. Not entirely sure how that is apropos to the article.
This article has about as much content as a mainstream print magazine. So many words, so little message. All I got out of this was, "People are angry about lack of porn backup. They're going to try and do something about it. Film at 11." Wake me up please, when "turned it up to 11" actually means something was accomplished.
Call me old fashioned, but we don't allow electronics at the dinner table. When we see those things, they are immediately removed to a chair or the floor.
The local community access television station here as recent as 2013 had an Amiga whose sole purpose was text crawls for advertisements and subtitles like the ones that pop up showing the names of the hosts or interviewers.
Both of your statements are correct.
Glad I took the time to read TFA. I would have been thoroughly confused given the headline and the summary text. Thanks for that.
Correlation is not causation. It reads like they went way out in left field to get to this point. Then again, they always say, "a fool and his money soon part ways".
