Journal tuxette's Journal: ouch, and other Sunday things... plus a poll... 6

One of the guys at the gym got pretty bashed up this morning. I didn't see what actually happened; I was busy doing my sets of sit-ups. I heard the crash though, and saw the blood running down his face. My guess is that he didn't fasten the weights on the EZ-curls bar he was working with, and that somehow, the weights slipped and hit him in the eye. The one lens of the glasses he was wearing got rather smashed as well...

Sucks for him, but I think he'll be OK. He was able to pick himself up and talk and get himself to the reception area for first aid. It could have been much worse, I suppose. You see near-accidents every now and then. You'd think it would happen to one of the idiots though...

This guy is one of the Sunday regulars, and usually has good form, etc. I never knew he doesn't speak Norwegian...

I'm still mildly sore from grading on Thursday but it's going over. I can actually pick myself off the sofa without moaning in pain now ;-) Doing a lot of cardio on the stationary bicycles and elliptical machine has helped. I'm going to be doing a lot of hard-core cardio this summer. My condition is pretty good now, but I want it to be beyond "pretty good." It has to be beyond "pretty good" to continue at the higher levels of Krav Maga...

As for strength training, I'm still undecided as to what kind of approach I want to take for the summer. As much as I love lifting weights, I may just focus on doing strength exercises based on using my own body as weight - pushups (I need to get better at these), pullups, etc. And combine that with endurance work, for example stay in pushups position for as long as I can, and go for longer each training session...

Oh, and I also need to do a lot of flexibility work too... hmmf...

Let's see...what else is going on? Not a whole lot. Didn't do very much yesterday, and just as much today... though our plans of going to the beach and sunbathing and swimming were thwarted with the sudden change of weather. After a lot of sunshine and warm weather, the rain is starting to come in. It's been pretty much cloudy all day (though I did manage to get an hour's worth of tanning/reading travel guide books in). Bah. We were going to grill some fish for dinner tonight. Looks like we'll have to fry it on a pan instead :-/

Poll: Speaking of the travel guide books, we're still very undecided as to where to go this fall. We've eliminated Hong Kong from the list. We're considering South Africa (Cape Town), Vietnam, and Singapore (+ Malaysia or Indonesia). We're willing to consider others, though not really Europe or North America. So the question is: where would you go for two weeks in October?

Yeah yeah... Brasil-Australia now... later ;-)

  • Ouch. Could it have been a skull crusher [exrx.net] gone horribly wrong? I used to do that before I almost bashed my head with the bar. Aftger that I switched to this [exrx.net].

The worst incident I've seen at the gym has been me dropping a dumbbell on my head (well, it was just a glancing blow). The squat rack, which is just a rack and not a box + safety bars kind of thing, has been placed next to the stretching area and I fear that some day something's going to go horribly wrong there. And what is it with people who don't u

  • Come to Australia and you could see the penguin parade [penguins.org.au]! ;-)
  • ... at the moment recommend neither Malaysia nor, in particular Indonesia.

I would go for either Vietnam or South Africa (or Souff Effrica, as we are fond of calling it here); I have to been to either place - but of the people I know who have ... well, they've been very enthusiastic ... afterwards, too, I mean.
  • Well, Florida is great in October. The weather is temperate in the 70's-80's, with very little rain. A cruise through the Caribean is pretty nice too. Could do a week in Disney, then a week in the Caribean leaving out of Miami. Though a tour through China would be really cool.
  • Using your own body is really wise. You are not likely to injure yourself and you can do so much that way.

I have also found that high rep lower weight training does a lot especially in circuit training.

But and I am not recommending, heavy weight trainging to can break through periods where nothing seems to make a difference.
