Journal tuxette's Journal: Trip Report - Vienna Day Seven 2
Day Seven - 7th of April
boyfriend of tuxette was going to be done with his conference stuff by lunch time, so I had the morning to myself. I was planning on going to the Wien Museum at Karlsplatz, but they were closed for renovation. Blah. To make matters worse, Mini-Wolfgang decided to stage a protest. *sigh* After I stuffed him back into my purse, I started walking around. I took a look at the Rathaus and then started walking around Mariahilferstraße, mostly in shoe shops, though I didn't find anything that really interested me. (Well, actually I did, and ended up going back for it on day eight.)
I can't get over how polite and gracious the Viennese are, yet also "casual" about it...
Shelf toilets: Another thing I didn't like about Vienna, besides the smoking, was the shelf toilets. I don't have any pictures, and you should be grateful for that. If you don't know what a shelf toilet is, imagine getting a full view of last night's sauerkraut after processing. (Instead of normal toilets where it kind of swims nicely in the water.) It makes for a nasty view and an awful smell. Apparently there's a historical reason for it, to check for worms (at least that's what I was told)... ick...
Anyway...
Lunch: at Dreiklang, this time with boyfriend of tuxette, who was finally finished with his conference stuff. Their daily specials include your choice of main dish and either a starter or a dessert. I chose the starter, Gelbesuppe. It was a fragrant golden soup, flavored with safran and other things, and quite tasty. My choice of main dish was Käsknudlern - these big ravioli-like things made with wholegrain flour and filled with tasty cheese. Boyfriend of tuxette had a gulasch as his main dish and some kind of banana pudding for dessert. He tried my soup, I tried his dessert. And of course, we quaffed all that good organic beer...
After lunch, we went to Prater to check it out and maybe ride the big ferris wheel there. The tickets were over 7 euro each though, and we really didn't think it was worth it, so we left...
Hmm... don't remember what we did the rest of the afternoon... Shopping, I think...
Dinner: Gasthaus Wickerl. I spotted this place while walking around in the area near the hotel and the menu looked good. It was also recommended in the guide book we used for this particular trip. We both ordered Wienerschnitzel of veal (we didn't even consider ordering the "chicken special") and some beer. Mmm... this was really, really good! The veal was tender and juicy, and you could taste that it was fried in butter. And the beer was good, as always. I have yet to have bad beer here...
I liked this place a lot. It seemed very "local" and was very bustling and happening. I'm happy, everyone's happy...
For dessert we had Mohntorte - black poppy seed cake, served with cherries, chocolate sauce, and lots of whipped cream. Mmm...cake... The dessert menu was kind of cute - it was written on a rolling pin...

More breakfast dammit! There, Nutella on white rolls! That's more like it! Now eat some more! Hey, don't walk away!
It's lunch time! Why aren't you eating? What? You're waiting for that bum boyfriend of yours? Eat something while waiting! Or drink beer! There he is, finally! Order some food! Order now!
Mmmm...soup... And what is this? Big dumpling-like ravioli-like things filled with cheese? Ooooh, tasty cheese! Hey, why didn't you order dessert?
Why aren't you eating more? OK, beer. Beer is good...
Dinnertime! Wienerschnitzel! I want Wienerschnitzel! Yes oh yes! Look at that! Oh this is so goooood! Mmmm....beer........
Now where's the dessert? Oh yes, yes, no, no NO! You're doing it again! Order your own dessert! Don't share!

All I can say is... I'm STINKING jealous at all the cool sites you get to see and the good food, and... ugh... I have inlaws coming in next week, so its like extra dull around here
Sounds like you are having a good time, though, so enjoy the trip
Oh, and about the shelfs... my brothers friend used to live in Vienna,

Mini-Wolfgang seems to be drinking an awful lot. Maybe the rest of the penguin family [yahoo.com] should organize an intervention and confront him about his drunken attitude [flickr.com]. ;)
