Journal tuxette's Journal: Trip Report - Vienna Day Four 3

Day Four - 4th of April

Art museum day! First, Kunsthistoriches Museum . My favorite parts of the museum were the ancient Egyptian (lots of sphinxes and tombs and mummies and the such) and the ancient Greek and Roman collections (lots of sculptures, especially of the male body). It's interesting to see how the level of details in things like stone/marble sculptures and tablets of written language change from ancient Egypt to ancient Greece to ancient Rome.

Some observations:

  • The statues of men showed handsome faces, beautiful bodies, and tiny cocks
  • Some of the ancient jewelry displayed looks a lot like what you can buy at some cheapo stand on the streets now
  • Heiroglyphics (they had lots of tablets) seemed like a pain-in-the-ass way to write things
  • The "floating heads" room was freakishly neat

Other neat statues - this statue of a discus thrower who is missing his head, an arm, and his manhood, and a statue of a four-headed sphinx...

They also had other things, like paintings (I wasn't too crazy about those) and a fascinating coins exhibit.

Lunch: at Amerlingbeisl. This place came recommended. I really should have come here for dinner, as they have separate lunch and dinner menus and the lunch menu isn't that exciting. But I did have a tasty and tender fried chicken schnitzel-like meal, with potatoes and salad. The place is quite old and very "local dive"-like, but in a good way. I'd go back... but again, for dinner...

MUMOK Next was the Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK). As I tend to prefer modern art for some odd reason, I liked this museum a lot. The special exhibit called "Kontakt" was interesting, and Dejanoff's kooky M&M sculptures were interesting, and the actionism exhibit was just plain weird...

Bloody hell, it's raining...

Dinner: I had dinner alone (boyfriend of tuxette had a work-related thing to do at the conference) at a restaurant/café called Dreiklang, which was recommended and very close to the hotel. It specializes in organic food. I had the daily special. The starter was a soup - a strong broth with dumplings. The main course was polenta schnitzels with sauerkraut and a very tasty salad on the side. There's just this je ne sais quoi with organic veggies. They taste very intense. the meal was wonderful...

I also drank a bit of organic beer. Hadmar from Weitra Bräu and Emmerberg-Bräu Øko-Pils.

Dreiklang itself is very charming. Small and kosy with friendly staff. I was actually there yesterday to have a cup of coffee, and one of the guys that works there speaks Swedish. He had lived in Göteborg a number of years...

For dessert I had Topfentorte - cheesecake. (I couldn't resist getting it hehe... ) Organic of course, and very tasty. More savoury than sweet; it wasn't really sweet at all, which suits me just fine. Heh, I should have had some port with this! I need to learn how to make something like this...
