Journal tuxette's Journal: Trip Report - Vienna Day Two 4

Day 2 - 2nd of April, 2006

tuxette is going to the zoo! tuxette is going to the zoo! tuxette is going to the zoo!

breakfast: The hotel's breakfast buffet included thin slices of some kind of dark bread (with and without seeds), white rolls, sweet pastries, boiled eggs, ham and other cold cuts, liver and turkey paté, jams, cheese, Nutella, yoghurt, cereal, müsli, milk and several kinds of juice (real juice too, not the fruit drink crap they served in Lisboa), and fruit (both a fruit salad and pieces of fresh fruit). We were always delivered a pot of coffee and a mug of hot milk to the table by one of the breakfast ladies. Good coffee too. The breakfast ladies were very friendly, especially this one woman who was always smiling and cheerful.

Sunday's coffee was kind of "thin" but it was fine for the rest of the week. Another interesting thing was that the eggs were very cooked. I'm one who likes my boiled eggs rather raw; runny yolks all the way! I was wondering if it had anything to do with the bird flu scare. Though we ate breakfast rather early the following Sunday morning (we had to be at the airport around 9 am) and the yolks, though cooked more than I like them, were not as overcooked as the eggs we had all week. Otherwise, I can't really complain about the breakfast.

Schönbrunn Zoo: Ooooh, they have pandas here. And what a surprise when we got to the panda house - one of the pandas was sitting and eating, and the other was stretched out in the sun, sleeping. They make a lot of noise when they eat. Chomp, chomp... btw - pandas spend 55% of their time eating, 41% sleeping/resting, and 4% doing other things. (For people it's 12-33-55.) The good life!

They also had PENGUINS! Lots of cute little penguins! Rockhopper penguins and King penguins and Humbolt penguins! The first two groups of penguins didn't seem to have a lot of space to play around. Though they seemed fat and satisfied. The Humboldt penguins, on the other hand, had a huge outdoor "playground" with lots of rocks and pools. They seemed to be having a very good time. I was also having a very good time hehe...

Oh, yeah. They have other animals there too ;-) Among other things, some kind of "tropical house" that was 28 C and 80% humidity. They had these cool bats and birds that would fly right by your face.

Lunch: Emperor's Pavillion, in the middle of the zoo. We both ordered Wienerschnitzel of pork and a beer each. It was good. But the service sucked. The waiter was cheeky enough to point out to us that service was not included in the bill as we were paying, and was kind of rude about it. WTF? (Everywhere else, service is included. I'm not even sure it's legal to not include service.) Needless to say, there went his tip...

We wanted to go see more animals after lunch, like the owls, but it started thundering and boyfriend of tuxette saw lightening, so I stopped by the gift shop to buy myself some plush penguins (heh!) and we headed back to the hotel...

Dinner: At Griechenbeisl. One of boyfriend of tuxette's colleagues (they are in Wien for a conference while I get to play hehe) joined us. I had the veal goulash. It came with this homemade pasta (there's a special name for it - don't remember what it was) that sucked up the sauce nicely. And an overpriced side salad. Austrian/Viennese goulash, while good, isn't as spicy as the Hungarian variety though. Boyfriend of tuxette had venison. That was also good, but my food was better ;-)

Number of steps: 17139
Kilometers covered: 8,5

RoF perspective

Breakfast! Look at all that good food spread out there! Hey, why are you skipping the pastries? Well, you can get up and get some more... Mmm... turkey paté! Why don't you buy turkey paté in Oslo? Hey, you're not finished yet!

Look at the panda chomp and chomp! I'm jealous! Why can't you sit down and eat all day? Instead of walking so much?!

Yes! Oh yes! Wienerschnitzel! Beer! Look at the size of that thing! Hey, why aren't you getting one of those pastries that looks so tasty?

Stop walking! Why can't the pandas be a good example for you?

Mmm...dinner... saucy goodness... hey! Order dessert!
