Journal turg's Journal: More GMail invites 24

Okay, so I've got even more GMail invites to give out today. Looks like established accounts are getting 6 new invites 12 hours after using up the last batch of invites.

IM me or e-mail me if you want one

The previous times I've done this, I've disabled comments and deleted the JE when the invites were gone. But just in case there's actually something to discuss here, I'll enable comments. (But if you're looking for an invite then IM, followed by e-mail, is the best way to get one from me).

  • Have any of your recent invites had problems getting logged in?

A friend used one of my invites this morning and has bene unable to login to his account. His settings seem okay, and even when I attempted to login there was an error. I can login to my account but I am guessing there is some kind of problem with new accounts.

    Dunno though.
    • Lots of people are having this problem this morning.

They seem to have released an enormous number if invites over the weekend, so they probably have greatly increased volume.
      • Okay just wanted to get some feedback, that is what we were suspecting.

I woke up to having 6 invites myself this morning. I didn't think I would get so many so fast. :)
    • I had that happen with my gmail account for about 12 hours. It returned to "normal" and even accepted the password I used after that. Give it some time, I expect the "broken" accounts are combed through by humans over there automatically.
      • Yeah its happened to two seperate people.

They must be getting slammed over there. Oh well, that's what the Beta test is for I suppose.
  • And people wonder why I'm not on Slashdot so much these days...

    • You just got yourself a gmail invite buddy. Take a look under the hood, even if you don't plan to use it. It's interesting.
      • You're actually serious, aren't you?

        [CharlieBrown] Good grief! [/CharlieBrown]

Frankly, I couldn't care less about the 1GB mailbox. What I would like is something to sift through the e-mail that's already on my PC, and tell me what needs replying to, what's inportant and/or useful, and what's out-of-date and ready to delete. Wonder if the Google people have such a product in mind for the future?

        • The various tools in gmail help with those tasks more than anything else I've seen -- but it works with your webmail only (so far?)

The 1 gig of storage isn't really a big deal compare to the other things. They've completely changed the way webmail works in every respect. But I guess the gig of storage is the easiest to trumpet because it's something measurable.
  • i have 7 invites myself... about to just waste them on random people.
    • BTW, there's been some relatively recent changes in moderation. One of the ones I'm sure otherwise will find significant was pointed out by sllort [slashdot.org]. There is a severe penalty to one's "tokens" when he uses overrated on the same user repeatedly. As such, he will be highly unlikely to get freedom to moderate again any time soon.

Aside from abuse of the Overrated mod, what else do you feel is broken about the system? Feel free to point me at an old journal entry of yours or whatnot, if still applicable. Ju

      yeah, that's basically what I'm doing [slashdot.org].

I will be eternally grateful as I need something in the interim as I change houses that isn't spammed to hell and back like my YIM email account. If I get one, I'll be sure to use at least one of my invites to someone else in the /. je group.
  • If you can spare one...

  • If so I'd like to check it out. Use my /. ID [and there is a _ in there] at yahoo dot com.
    • You have an invite now in case you hadn't already. ;) Check your bulk mail folder before emptying it (in case it ends up there).

      • Turg actually sent me an invite the other day, I guess I should have posted something along those lines here, and it's up and running. Please pass it on to another poor slob that doesn't have an account yet, really liking [slashdot.org] it myself. Thank you though.
  • If you are still trying to get rid of some ...
