Journal turg's Journal: Re: Moderators abusing\misusing -1 Redundant? 1
This is in response to stedyj's journal entry on "Moderators abusing\misusing -1 Redundant?". (It is too late to post a comment there)
stedyj, I think you miss the point of moderation. It's not about you -- it's about making the comments more readable and useful to the reader. Your comment, through no fault of your own, was clearly redundant and the moderation was accurate. The moderation is not a punishment for you but a benefit for the reader.
If readers do not want to see redundant comments, why would they care whether they were written two seconds apart or two days apart? (actually, now that I think of it, it's more annoying when they're written at almost the same time).

But you are wrong about one thing -- moderation IS personal. At least it can be, to some people. Moderation adds or removes Karma, the one thing to rank the worth of individuals on
At the same time, most readers don't want to hear the same story form a different perspective, so it should be modded down, right? But was it my fault I was thinking along the same lines of another reader, and just happened to type a bit slower? When I wrote that post, it was quite early on the story. Even having it modded down to a score of 0 kept it fully in view. If that mod point was in stead used to mod UP the post ahead of mine, everyone could have been happy. In maybe 30 minutes, there would be enough posts in the thread that my comment at 1 would still disappear, and the quicker typer would be rewarded, the slower not penalized.
In my view, the -1 Redundant mod is designed for those who just post blindly, not bothering to see if anyone has brought it up yet, or perhaps trying to score some of the Karma someone else was getting with that idea. I was doing neither. Does that really mean that I should have been knocked down?
