Journal turg's Journal: boom boom boom. Out go the lights 6

About half of Toronto has the power back now. Our power came back at 3:40 am. Can't connect to the net, but this café around the corner can.

Last night, we were sitting out on the front lawn with the radio on. Over on Danforth Ave were the hordes of people walking home (We live one door away from Danforth). You've never seen so many people in sweat-drenched office clothes. One guy turns up our street and stops to listen to the radio. We invite him to have a seat. It's about 8:00 pm (power went off at around 4:10) He's been walking from King St. and Bathurst Ave., which Mapquest tells me is 11.35 km away (about 7 miles). (We're off Danforth between Woodbine and Victoria Park.) The temperature is still close to 30 C. But the worst of it is that he came all that way with no idea of what was going on. That must have been creepy, if not scary.

The stars were incredible last night. I went for a walk some time around 10 or 11 pm and even on Danforth, which was still quite busy, the sky was black and there were thousands of stars. Usually you can quickly count the number of stars visible from here. A little bit off of Danforth and I could almost make out the Milky Way

  • Where I grew up you could see millions of stars. Now living near one big city and working in another I can count them within a minute...all six of 'em. That's why I love going to Death Valley California for a weekend and taking a telescope. What was the Bruce Lee Line? All the heavenly glory?
  • I'm in North York (just a bit N of the 401) and our power was restored around 1:30 PM. Of course, cable was out until a little while ago, so this is my first internet fix in over 24 hours ...

Walking around this morning was just bizarre! We took a stroll just to see if anywhere nearby had power, if anything was open. (No luck there.) We were a little surprised at how many people were driving around today! HUGE lineups at the payphones, and at bus stops. A catering truck in the parking lot of a nearby Esso (

That almost makes it sound like it was worth it. :-)

Damn, I spend way too much time in the city.
