Journal turg's Journal: EXIF data for slashdot photo contest 33

I have extracted the EXIF data for all the jpegs in the photo contest. For most of the photos, this gives the date the photo was taken (or scanned), the make and model of the camera (or scanner, etc.), the image editing software that was used, plus all the camera settings (shutter speed, flash, f-stop, etc.) and sometimes even more.

Not something you're going to read from top to bottom but may provide useful clues about that one photo you're having trouble with.

  • Nice to know that Photoshop 6 strips the EXIF on resize and save as...

That is a possible hint, I guess. That's me, the EXIF free one!

  • Even my data stands out in a crowd.
  • I'm one of the ones with no data. HA HA. Thanks, photoshop for stripping all that crap out. I;'m also the same pic from last time, which is an even BIGGER clue!
  • are a true geek.

May I subscribe to your newsletter?
  • looks like Paint Shop Pro also removes the data on an image manipulation. Interesting.

  • ...and of all the ones showing a camera model, mine's possibly the oldest and crummiest of the bunch.

I guess I must now hand in my Geek License.

    Cheers,

    • Nonsense. You are a true geek for having the oldest digital camera, ie before everyone else. :-)
    • You think that's bad? I actually had to borrow (steal, because she didn't know about the photocontest until I talked about it) my girlfriends camera because I don't own one!!!! All my pics were made with the auto-thingy (wtf is that called?) It was a bitch to get good pics without asking anyone.

Besides, I've been told by a designer (a guy that does Photoshop all day) that a 2Mpix camera will do just fine for normal size pictures as long as the optics are good. Having an older camera (more expensive ba

      • Yes, a 2 megapixel camera is basically the same quality as a cheap 35mm. Perfectly OK for snapshots. Our camera isn't too shabby, really, though it definitely has trouble in low-light situations and the flash tends to make the pictures look really contrasty and washed-out.

My parents have a slightly newer 3 megapixel Olympus that handles low-light situations loads better, but the pictures are always rather fuzzy -- not sure if it's the compression (they're even fuzzy when I have quality set on maximum) or

        • though I would like to have an Ixus..

I bought an Ixus (430, they are cheap these days) for both my girlfriend and my mom. Well, "I bought" should be read as "I recommended" because I didn't pay a single euro ;-) The 500 model was much more expensive for not offering much more. The reason I took the Ixus: Compact Flash instead of all those exotic new fancy things, 3x optical zoom, good reviews. It's a nice camera. It can't hold water with reflex camera's but we only have those in chemical versions

          • 229,99€ [amazon.de]

That's friggin no money! Buy two... send one to me... I'll pay postage and reimburse you on your german account :-)

            • Sadly, I ain't got the money right now -- we have to move next month and scrape together the €1500 for the security deposit, plus pay double rent a month (since we won't exactly manage to move instantaneously), plus pay to have our old apartment renovated...well, you get the picture.

Though I'll keep it in mind. ;-)

Of course you're coming to Hannover to lend a hand, right? ;-)

              Cheers,

              Ethelred

              • I understand... I know how this goes... Don't worry. My parents have experience with apartments. Heck, I just spent nearly 1000€ on a printer. (Yeah, I'm crazy).

Of course you're coming to Hannover to lend a hand, right? ;-)

I would... I most certainly help friends moving... But it would cost me over 120€ [mappy.com] just to come to help you and get back. That's half a camera dude... :-D And that's counting only Lux gas prices (1,005€/litre for 98oct) which isn't correct since I would have to fi

                • Holy shit. For €1/liter for Super, it's almost worth it to drive to Lux just to fill up. ;-)

Last time I filled up it was €1.16/liter, and it's going uppish. Thankfully our Rover averages ~7L/100 km, so while that's not hugely wonderful, it's not shabby, either. I also drive as much on the highways as I can to save gas, stay in high gear, etc. Problem is that we do a lot of short-distance driving, so it drags down the average a lot.

Anyway, yeah, maybe we could meet in Düsseldorf or Cologne

                  • My car averages 10l/100km... So you get why I feel pain these days. When I bough the car, 0.650€/litre was expensive :-((( Oh, well, gotta feed those 225 horsies somehow.

June... make your timing right: 10/06 is civil wedding, 16/07 is church. It's going to get stressy around that time.

I don't understand why the gas is going so much up these days. Dollar is low, that should work in our advantage... I must have flunked in economy on that part.. :-(

      • Yeah, worry more about the optics than the size of the CCD. You could probably say that digital cameras share an attribute with audio amps, in that all else being equal (although of course it never is), bigger is better. More glass means better image, period.

Aside from that, look for pixel count and geekiness of controls; I'd rather have my mom's 3MP Fuji S5000 than my 4MP+ [BRAND REDACTED], simply because her Fuji offers more fine grained control of aperture and flash.
  • ...that webcams don't do EXIF. :-) (I saved a frame from the captured AVI to a bitmap with VirtualDub, which got crunched into JPEG with cjpeg.)
  • I love my uncooperative camera! W00t!
    What do I win?
  • Comment removed based on user account deletion
    • Depends. Mine is definitely time of shot. Of course, if someone reads through my journals and other postings, the data in that list is enough to make me really obvious.
  • My EXIF data is terse, to the point, and the date is oh-so-misleading :-)
  • I've been lurking but my pic also didn't have any exif information :)
  • Dang! I feel guilty for doing the same thing with the pics. I thought I was the only one. ;)
