Make-A-Wish Builds A Millennium Falcon Fort For Boy 94

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and a production crew from Little Mountain Productions, a 9-year-old is getting the best fort ever. The crew is making him a Star Wars-themed fort with a gigantic Millennium Falcon with solar-powered LED interior and exterior lighting to sit on top. No word on how fast it can make the Kessel run, but lets hope the kid gets a long trip.

'Dubbed Gemini, [Andrew Wade's] creature is made of two sets of identical structures, which sit at either end of the instruction tape. Each is a fraction of the size of the tape's length but, made up of two constructor arms and one "destructor," play a key role. Gemini's initial state contains three of these structures, plus a fourth that is incomplete. As the simulation progresses the incomplete structure begins to grow, while the structure at the start of the tape is demolished. The original Gemini continues to disassemble as the new one emerges, until after nearly 34 million generations, new life is born.'"

Not only is the inclusion of PS3 and Xbox 360 titles odd, the date the games were released is even more surprising. Yes, Madden 07 and 08 are included in the shutdown... but Madden 09 on all consoles as well?"

EA Shuts Down Pandemic Studios, Cuts 200 Jobs 161

lbalbalba writes "Electronic Arts is shutting down its Westwood-based game developer Pandemic Studios just two years after acquiring it, putting nearly 200 people out of work. 'The struggling video game publisher informed employees Tuesday morning that it was closing the studio as part of a recently announced plan to eliminate 1,500 jobs, or 16% of its global workforce. Pandemic has about 220 employees, but an EA spokesman said that a core team, estimated by two people close to the studio to be about 25, will be integrated into the publisher's other Los Angeles studio, in Playa Vista.' An ex-developer for Pandemic attributed the studio's struggles to poor decisions from the management."

Turbine Planning Console MMO 31

Turbine, the game studio that developed Lord of the Rings Online, said they are working on MMO products for consoles, for which they plan to provide details early next year. Kotaku notes that Turbine is also looking at incorporating user-generated content in future games. Quoting: "Turbine has the license to make MMOs based on the Tolkien universe until 2012, with options to extend until 2017. ... Turbine has its eye on open worlds and user-generated content, too: 'We're working on tech to let people... enable self evolving worlds,' [Turbine's communications director Adam Mersky] said. 'The idea is, we have these immersive, beautiful 3D worlds and they're designed by professional artists — but how can we let people create content in those... without "suburban sprawl," allow them to create gameplay environments.'"

I don't know about where you are, but here in Austin TX the resolutions are fixed by channel. For example, ABC, NBC, PBS, and WB all broadcast at either 480i or 1080i. The FOX affiliate broadcasts at 480i or 720p. These are OTA only. On the local cable company, everything except FOX and ESPN are upconverted to 1080i - why I don't know. I believe the reason is 1080 is a bigger number than 720 and thus must be better. Finally, everything HD on DirecTV is 720p. Bitrates vary (IMHO PBS usually having the best starting in the evening when they turn off the three other feeds they provide OTA) all the time. The best resource I've found has been the AV Science Forum which has a rather large listing of HDTV information for various cities.

Finally, to add some fuel to the 720p vs 1080i debate - IMHO: it's all about your output device. If your output device is any type of projection (including rear projection TVs) then p is always better than i simply because that's how your device draws the screen anyway. I could be wrong, but at least it seems that way to me.
