Many people compare software design with building something. But the correct comparison would be to compare with *designing* something.
Building a bridge, toaster, house .. whatever.. is only the final execution (like coding). Projects for bridges, toasters or houses are behind schedule just like software projects.
And about the formal standards - they are required in case the software could kill somebody (like for bridges, houses, toasters). Otherwise - it is not my busies how my neighbor did build his kitchen table..
