That is actually sort of alarming to me since they probably install 4 identical pumps at the same time each with a rated lifetime that is about the same. So when the first fails, the others are surely soon to follow, And that takes us full circle to why if one fails, the system is designed to shut down.

Genetically Engineered Mouse is Not Scared of Cats 286

Gary writes "A team from the University of Tokyo has genetically engineered a mouse that does not fear cats. By tweaking genes to disable certain functions of the olfactory bulb (the area of the brain that receives information about smells directly from olfactory receptors in the nose) the researchers were able to create a 'fearless' mouse that does not try to flee when it smells cats, foxes and other predators. 'The research suggests that the mechanism by which mammals determine whether or not to fear another animal they smell -- and whether or not to flee -- is not a higher-order cerebral function. Instead, that decision is made based on a lower-order function that is hardwired into the neural circuitry of the olfactory bulb.'"

Actually, it just offers more proof that /. will run with a rumor if it sounds like it will serve their needs politically. This garbage should never have seen the light of day until they took the time to get ANY kind of confirmation. (considering the source) But I expect no less of people who have an agenda. I have yet to see an article biased in the other direction. Will I? no.

Are Marines Censoring Web Access for Troops in Iraq? 925

Gavin86 and others have submitted links to This Wonkette article (profanity warning) about the Marines Corps blocking access to some Web sites for their people in Iraq. This article was a follow-up to an earlier Wonkette post. Before I posted these links, I looked for verification of this problem but found nothing but links to Wonkette, so I cannot say for sure whether this is true. Hopefully, alert Slashdot readers (like you) will post confirmations if, indeed, there are any to be found. Meanwhile, if this is true, it's eerily reminiscent of an experience I had when I visited Saudi Arabia in January, 2004.
