Part of the goal of dual-stacking is to enable IPv6 where you can. Noone says you "MUST HAVE 100% IPv6-only EVERYWHERE". Your printers, for example, can stay IPv4-only ... everything else (which probably already supports IPv6, BTW) can move to IPv4+IPv6 in a planned fashion. The benefit: you are ready before you need to be, and don't need a firedrill style deployment down the road. Oh, and it really can be fairly straight-forward :).

An anonymous reader excerpts from an interesting article at Ars Technica, which begins "There are 3,706,650,624 usable IPv4 addresses. On January 1, 2000, approximately 1,615 million (44 percent) were in use and 2,092 million were still available. Today, ten years later, 2,985 million addresses (81 percent) are in use, and 722 million are still free. In that time, the number of addresses used per year increased from 79 million in 2000 to 203 million in 2009. So it's a near certainty that before Barack Obama vacates the White House, we'll be out of IPv4 address[es]. (Even if he doesn't get re-elected.)"

Verizon Refuses To Provide Complete IPv6 438

Glendale2x writes "I'm a progressive sort of guy and I want to go full dual-stack, IPv6 for the future, etc. However I recently tried to turn up a new Verizon circuit with IPv6 (after a 6-month fiber install process), and to my chagrin the order they accepted back in May they're now saying is against their policy to provide. They're missing around 29% of the IPv6 internet and refuse to carry it. Tell me again how we're supposed to encourage IPv6 adoption in the face of a huge black hole like this?"

WRT "Basically, it'll start to happen when we really do run out of IP addresses and things get desperate" ... it is important to note that we are within 2-5 years of this, and as most well managed businesses (especially ISPs) plan on 2-5 year windows the time is actually _right now_. And that is why ISPs are (for the most part) all moving forward with IPv6 planning & integration. Not selling it publicly/production-grade yet, but ask again in the next ~year and the answer will be different in many cases (that I personally know of).

Comcast is now upping the ante a bit and has now said that they are seriously gearing up for IPv6 residential broadband deployment soon. 'Comcast plans to enter into broadband IPv6 technical trials later this year and into 2010,' Barry Tishgart, VP of Internet Services for Comcast said. 'Planning for general deployment is underway.'"

Google Engineers Say IPv6 Is Easy, Not Expensive 233

alphadogg writes "Google engineers say it was not expensive and required only a small team of developers to enable all of the company's applications to support IPv6, a long-anticipated upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol. 'We can provide all Google services over IPv6,' said Google network engineer Lorenzo Colitti during a panel discussion held in San Francisco Tuesday at a meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Colitti said a 'small, core team' spent 18 months enabling IPv6, from the initial network architecture and software engineering work, through a pilot phase, until Google over IPv6 was made publicly available. Google engineers worked on the IPv6 effort as a 20% project — meaning it was in addition to their regular work — from July 2007 until January 2009."
