Even with enterprise level Samsung drives, the cost per drive is almost half that! Just crazy. And the only version that ssd's a make difference for are very underpowered for what you would have to pay for the ssds. It's a complete joke. I have 6 8tb evos in my ds620+slim and it cost nearly half that as well. Just terrible decision for a company who can be replaced. Their spinning hdds are somewhat more reasonable but I have specific brands I like and that they don't use(I've had too many seagates go bad on me early).

Big Adobe energy here without the monopoly to really work for them.

I think most of the time devices are like this anyways. They are build on some kind of linux subsystem host with some proprietary hardware running GPS daughtercards or modules. I am guessing FB wanted some specific security that the major manufacturers didn't want to provide (are there any devices with LDAP integration and without shitty wide-open telnet access? I'm a little out of the loop here). So, they took the important bits, put it on a PCI card, and now they can use any host that can provide whatever functionality they want.

Comment WeChat full traffic ban? (Score 2) 206

According to the CNN write-up of the directive (https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/18/tech/tiktok-download-commerce/index.html), any and all internet traffic containing WeChat data will be illegal. I wonder how they plan to enforce that, exactly, and who it would be enforced against. A lot of Chinese Americans apparently use WeChat to stay in touch with their families in China. This could be turn to sinophobic ends pretty easily, via selective enforcement.

The executive order also prevents TikTok from applying security updates, which sounds like the kind of thing worm writers love to hear... But, eventually, TikTok traffic becomes illegal on November 12th, unless Oracle can make Trump happy. Again, how that would be enforced -- and how selectively it will be enforced -- is concerning.

Comment Turn key back on? (Score 1) 350

Why wouldn't the military just turn their encryption keys back on so that they can use it but others get worse data? I do agree that teaching your officers celestial navigation is important, but when shit hits the fan, it will be interesting to see which ones actually retain it and can use it without constant practice.

Undersea Cable Break Disrupts Life In Northern Mariana Islands 102

An anonymous reader writes: The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands experienced a devastating undersea cable break on Wednesday, with phone, Internet, SMS, banking services, the National Weather Service office, and airliners all being affected. The US territory depends on a single undersea fiber optic connection with Guam for its connectivity to the outside world (except for a backup microwave link, which was itself damaged during a recent storm). While services are in the process of being restored, this may be a prime example of the need for reliable backup systems in our "always connected" mindset.

I wonder how many metabolic studies have been done on male-to-female transsexuals. If you start with a dmab with a small frame, you don't have to discard much muscle tissue nor gain much body fat to reach a more efficient metabolic ratio. Plus, you don't have to worry about a menstrual cycle (emotional but also physical competitors) and gynecological health. You can tweak hormonal balance to control muscle mass, so that if you expect to need more heft in a few months, you can engineer just that!
