Journal tomhudson's Journal: The joys of metamodderating 5
One of the *problems* of metamoderating is I get disctracted by all the neat stuff when I do a "see context".
Like this: http://www.hevanet.com/peace//republican.htm
Or the discussion on lame passwords, etc.
It's an embarrassment of riches. Its too bad thre's no mod for "Sort of Offtopic but Interesting", and that metamoddng is either "fair" or "unfair". Sometimes I see why something was modded off-topic, but its still interesting and I can see how, in the context, its a fair comment, even if it is off-topic.

I also have problems with 'offtopic' when not all of the posts in the same subthread are modded 'offtopic'. Why is this post offtopic but not the rest? I mostly leave those comments 'unmetamodderated'.
Many time it is inpossible to known if a comment is really offtopic because it is a thread of his own. When the story has 200 + comments I do not bother to check but leave it.

What I find stupid is people using their mod points to mod bomb someone to oblivion. They really need to get out more often :-)

True, so true. I added some people to my friends because of this (not you!) because otherwise they would post under my threshold (0) and I would never see their comments.

I view slashdot with a threshold of 3/3, with foes/freaks -1/-6, new users 15%/-2. This seems to keep out the more uncivil stuff. I metamoderate almost daily, and I moderate quite often (7 times since june), and when i do I browse at -1/-1 and zero penalties. Every once in a while it's a good thing to listen to what others have to say without worrying too much about who's saying it. Small price to pay to have to deal with the occasional GNAA post.
