Journal tomhudson's Journal: The battle continues - laptop w. 1TB hd, bluray burner 4

This week's flyer - Staples (who usually suck)
  1. Toshiba Satellite Intel 2.4ghz Core I5
  2. 4 gigs ddr3 ram (can be expanded to 8 gigs)
  3. twin 500 gig hds - 1 tb total storage
  4. nvidia 1 gig ddr5 video memory
  5. blu-ray burner and 10 blank 25-gig blu-ray disks
  6. 18.4" screen
  7. Windows home premium 64-bit
  8. 4 usb, expresscard, eSata, bridge media adapter, sp/dif, firewire, rgb, hdmi

$999.99

So I should imagine that the deals will keep coming ... hopefully some time next spring this same laptop will have 8 gigs of ram, twin 750 gig hds, and sell for $799.00. At that price ...

I know - "It weights 9-1/4 pounds!" But 10 pounds doesn't matter when it's on my bicycle's carry rack, or when it's sitting on a table or desk.

  • I'll buy it.... When my current laptop gives up the ghost, which is very unlikely in the near future. ;-) Let's see. January 2007, estimated lifespan 5 year (typical lifespan of a laptop in my possession with the exception of the crap brand known as "Apple". My iBook only lasted 3 years). So, in January 2012 I'm probably up for a new one... If finances permit and the dumpsters don't yield something usable. ;-)

I still have that Core 2 Duo laptop I got for free of which I tried to upgrade the screen. I

    • I figure my current laptop is probably at it's mid-point, so another 3-4 years. My desktop, now into it's 7th year, is getting near it's EOL as a desktop (though it still continues to chug along, thanks to the upgrades over the years).

Still, I want the quiet of 2 laptops instead of a laptop and a desktop - and it looks like the new generation of laptops might support 3 displays at once, which would make for a really nice development environment :-) Recovering some desktop space, better performance, and

      • yeah, I'm about 3 years into mine, figure I got another 18 months tops, but I really want something with a better resolution than what I have now so I figure I'll see what's going on in mid-Feb.

Keep up with the pricewatching ... I'm still listening ;)

        • You're not the only one looking - one of the guys at work originally said he wasn't in the market for that $498 deal... now that there are none left, it's "If you see another deal like that, let me know ..."
