Journal tomhudson's Journal: Threatening to "out" me? Silly kook ... 171
Silly usenet kook - trying to troll me is like bringing coals to Newcastle
It was funny to see a usenet kook (search for "Jennifer Usher srs kook faq") threatening to "out" me. I've been "out" on slashdot since 2005, and slashdot has a lot more readers than an obscure usenet group.
Of course, outing someone against their will is in bad taste, not to mention it could have serious real-world consequences, from job loss to physical injury. It's one reason I recommend not "being stealth", even when, like me, it's a realistic option. Not to mention that it's illegal in plenty of places (like where I live), and a violation of many TOS. Oh wait, I just mentioned it. Silly me
Part Two: The advantages and disadvantages of being "out"
First, consider that in the long term you may not realistically have a choice. It's almost inevitable that if you're living in "stealth mode", there are going to be some slip-ups. It could be as simple as someone from your past accidentally mentioning it to someone they thought already knew, or gaps in your cover story that will elicit questions. A legal issue could arise that requires you to acknowledge your previous life before you changed gender. Someone you trusted may simply decide to out you over some petty grievance.
You don't have control over how this happens, and when that happens, life can get ugly. Damage control will be difficult, and the consequences both at home and at work can be devastating. On the other hand, if the people around you already know, and you treat it like a non-issue, so will most of them.
simplify your life and reduce your stress
There's also something else to consider when weighing the question of "to stealth or not to stealth" - just how much background stress are you experiencing when, in the back of your mind, you have this nagging worry that some day the other shoe will drop. Do you remember how relieved you were to start living full-time as a woman rather than maintaining two identities? Consider how much better life could, not just for you but for those around you, when the world isn't divided into "those who know" and "those I hope don't find out.".
Society has changed in the last few decades, and the perceived stigma associated with having a transsexual past is less than ever. Most people understand that it's not something you "choose", it's something you "are", same as your skin colour or your height or age, or whether you catch colds easily. When it comes to gender, "it is what it is", same as sexual orientation.
Another advantage is that when you finally find the job you like and are settled in, it won't suddenly become an issue that you may have fudged your resumé to cover for some of the gaps in your past.
There are, of course, problems that can come up by being open about your past. There will always be the gossip, the petty person who can only make themselves feel good by making others feel bad. If they don't know, they can't use it against you. However, by the same token, if you don't care who knows, and if the people around you already know, they can't really use it against you either. By being "out", you've at least partially immunized yourself from such ignorami.
Usher attacks anyone - transsexual, transgender, cross-dresser, whatever - who doesn't "measure up" to some mythical standard because Usher is, quite literally, unable to pass as a woman. Once claiming to be a transvestite, then "more than a transvestite but less than a transsexual", then all sorts of other crazy combos, nobody believes Usher ever was a transsexual, and is certainly not typical. Confronted with this after a decade of attacking transsexuals, Usher attacks all transsexuals who disagree, or those of us who, like me, support the rights of all LGBT, not just other transsexuals.
Like every other group, transsexuals attract a certain subset of crazies. Dealing with them is where I first learned to troll, so it has its' good points.
