What NAS To Buy? 621

An anonymous reader writes "Currently, I'm running an old 4u Linux server for my private backup and storage needs. I could add new drives, but it's just way too bulky (and only IDE). For the sake of size and power efficiency I think about replacing it with a NAS solution, but cannot decide which one to get. The only requirements I have are capacity (>1.5TB) and RAID5. Samba/FTP/USB is enough. Since manufacturers always claim their system to be the best, I'd like to hear some suggestions from you Slashdot readers."

Linux Finally Getting XBMC 203

B47h0ry'5 CuR53 writes "XBMC is getting ported to Linux. A few developers of Team-XBMC have begun the porting of XBMC to Linux using OpenGL and the SDL toolkit. In this effort, they are recruiting developers. XBMC is, by far, one of the finest projects to come out of the open source community; and to think it is homebrew. XBMC is a massive project, with the current SVN branch weighing about 350M before compilation. Porting it will be a big effort and any hackers willing to contribute should check out the Linux port project."

Comment Re:Boot Time? (Score 1) 323

ive got 5,500 id3-tagged songs on there, and space free. the load time from "off" to playing music is ~20 seconds, the device takes about 6 seconds to get to the boot screen "loading" etc., displaying the firmware revision and proceeding in.

in general, switching modes (e.g. plugging in the usb cable, switching to picture/radio/text modes takes about 6 seconds to load up the new section, and the screen turns off to save power in most modes. it also takes about 3-6 seconds to turn off the player, a bit longer if it's still recording, about 7-10 seconds.

it's not sleek, but from hard stop to play, is 20 odd seconds. for a hdd player, i guess that's fair.
