Good point. I'm certainly not condoning AT&T in this case. They could have done a better job at hiding their stuff. Yeah, it would suck AT&T put a box in my front yard.

I was making a point more about the experience I've I had with the general population, not so much defending AT&T. My company just installed a cell network for a major US city. We have about 450 cell towers that we built on top of telephone poles. They are designed to be quiet and be non intrusive. They are painted brown on are really hard to notice unless you are looking for them.

Our teams only need to be in the area for construction and initial setup. When I'm out in the field, I've made a point of treating residents with respect and courtesy. I know that one my coworkers might have to visit the location again at a later date and I don't want the residents to be pissed at them for my actions. (The urban areas are pretty dangerous.)

I've had people come out of their homes yelling at me telling me to remove the tower from the pole. They don't understand what it does and are just unhappy with it. It's funny but I still like my job... it's always interesting.

Submission + - NASA Ikhana Assists SoCal Firefighters

ackthpt writes: Discovery News has a nifty article on NASA's Ikhana drone. Ikhana designed for suborbital earth sciences missions, may be fitted out with a variety of sensors, the same as deployed on satellites to study atmospheric conditions up close. Wednesday, Ikhana took off from Edwards Air Force Base for a 10 hour mission to observe forest fires, scanning the terrain from 23-25,000 feet using a variety of sensors for visible and IR light. Able to remain aloft for up to 30 continuous hours without break and view during night, Ikhana serves up information in minutes, which required hours by manned aircraft observation. "The data is processed on the aircraft, up-linked to a satellite and then downloaded to a ground station. From there it's delivered to a computer server at NASA Ames. The imagery is then combined with Google Earth maps. Command center personnel can view the images on their computer screens and then delegate local firefighters accordingly." Now how cool is that?

TV Links Raided, Operator Arrested 246

NetDanzr writes "TV Links, a Web site that provided links to hundreds of movies, documentaries, TV shows and cartoons hosted on streaming media sites such as Google Video and YouTube, has been raided by UK authorities. The site's operator was also arrested, The Guardian reports. Even though the site has not hosted any pirated content, it was a thorn in the side of movie and TV studios, thanks to having links to newest movies and TV shows. As the largest site of its kind, it showcased the power of user-driven Internet, with the site's visitors helping to keep links to content constantly updated."

Halo In Church Points Out ESRB Flaws 185

The recent controversy over church groups making use of Halo 3 to attract young men to their services continues to be a subject of debate outside of the fan press. GamePolitics notes that the debate is indicative of flaws in the ESRB's system, and in mainstream culture's understanding of those ratings. "When you look at it like that, it's hard to blame those who criticize bringing Halo into sacred space. For the most part the critics are not gamers and have no concept of the vast difference between Halo and GTA. All they know is that the games share a common M rating, a designation assigned by the game industry itself, theoretically for the protection of impressionable youth. For the uninitiated it's only logical to assume the content must be of a similar character as well. As someone who has played both, I'd argue that there is a world of difference between Halo and GTA."

Giuliani — "We'll Be Prepared" to Repel Alien Invasion 3

"Giuliani, grin on his face, said it was the first time he's been asked about an intergalactic attack." Sure, he's smiling now. He won't be so cheerful when his Dominion double is ruling Earth and he's in a detention cell in the gamma quadrant.

Feed Techdirt: Amway/Quixtar Sues Web Critics (techdirt.com)

Direct marketing firm Quixtar, which some people may recognize as the online arm of well known multi-level marketing firm Amway, has apparently sued 30 anonymous online critics who disparaged the company on blogs and in YouTube videos. Quixtar is claiming that the attacks are from a group of former "distributors" who later sued the company. The distributors are currently under court order not to disparage the company -- so if these posts and videos are from them, it would be a violation of the court order. Of course, if it turns out these aren't from those distributors, then it just makes Quixtar look like a big bully. Actually, that seems likely either way. Apparently, one of the videos concerns a guy showing how Quixtar's products are much more expensive than buying the same products at a grocery store. It's hard to see how that's "disparaging" if it's factually true. Anyway, if Quixtar is trying to hide critical videos about the company, it probably has a long way to go. A quick search suggests there are an awful lot of folks out there posting negative videos about the company.
