Comment Linus quote (Score 2) 125

'In a possibly related note, Linus Torvalds said this week in a new interview that "I use Fedora on all my machines, not because it's necessarily 'preferred', but because it's what I'm used to. I don't care deeply about the distribution — to me it's mainly a way to get Linux installed on a machine and get all my tools set up, so that I can then replace the kernel and work on just that.' Linus actually said this at the Debian Conf14 which was held in Portland, OR in 2014. Linus lives in the very wealthy suburb of Dunthorpe (actually, the richest suburb in the Portland, OR area) and Linus did a Q&A session for this Debian Conf.

Comment No, do not block them! Annoy them! (Score 1) 134

No, do not block these annoying, idiotic and silly SSH brute force bots. Instead, waste their time! There are two apps for this: endlessh (easy to compile) and tarssh (done in rust, easy to install with cargo). Both endlessh and tarssh listen for SSH connections. When the annoying SSH brute-force bots try to access the system, the get a never-ending welcome message/MOTD. It wastes their time and resources. In the meantime, you would use Port 2222 (or another port if you wish) on your real SSH server. These annoying and silly SSH brute-force bots only scan for Port 22.
