Israelis Sue Government For Laser Cannons 736

An anonymous reader writes "Residents of a southern Israeli town want a real-life laser cannon to protect them against Palestinian rocket attacks. And they're suing the national government, for failing to provide the ray gun defense. The U.S.-Israeli Tactical High Energy Laser project was widely considered to be the most successful energy weapon ever built. But the toxic chemicals needed to generate THEL's megawatts of power made the thing a logistical nightmare. It was scrapped. Now, the residents of Sderot want it back. And they're taking Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to court to make it happen."

Those dwelling in Atlanta can look forward to a whole lot of hands-on time with AT&T gadgetry, as the first AT&T Experience store to hit the east coast has landed in Georgia. The 5,000 square foot showroom enables googly-eyed consumers to play with U-verse, broadband internet, music-centric kiosks, a slew of handsets, mobile connectivity devices, and more accessories than you'd care to count. Apparently, this megastore will also sport a fresh, refined look, bunches of HDTVs, 30 employees to answer your inquiries, and aims to inform consumers about AT&T's wireless and wireline offerings. Notably, this won't be the last Experience shop to open on the right coast, as AT&T is reportedly hoping to erect "several more" to go along with the San Antonio and Houston openings that happened earlier this year.

Submission + - Nissan turns to high-tech to stop drink driving

StonyandCher writes: As part of its drive to reduce road deaths and injuries, Nissan Motor has installed in a car three prototype high-tech systems designed to stop drink driving.

The first attempts to directly detect alcohol in the driver's sweat and gear shift lever. A second system in the car uses a camera mounted in front of the driver to monitor eye movement. If the driver is drowsy it triggers the seat belt to tighten and this movement will hopefully snap the driver out of their drowsiness or prompt them to take a rest. A third system monitors the path of the vehicle to ensure it's traveling in a straight line and not weaving about the road, as is common with a drunken driver.

Systems administrators, database administrators, storage administrators and higher level IT super users are the types who may access sensitive executive information; one source quoted in the article says that in a company with 1,500 employees, there might typically be five to 10 administrators who have this access. As for how many abuse these priviledges, it's hard to tell, but rogue admins out for workplace revenge or personal gain can wreak havoc: '... Experts agree that the severity of these occurrences generally makes them more harmful than external attacks. One of the biggest obstacles to eliminating unauthorized access is determining how many people have it. Access lists are particularly difficult to formulate in both mature companies, where the number and power of administrators have expanded over periods of years, and small companies, where rapid growth leads to undocumented tangles of administrators who are able to maintain their access because nobody has time to assess their status.'"
