Journal Journal: tim's new blog

Seeing as blogging has reached the masses I'm going to start writing in a normal blog.
I will no longer write in here most likely.

the new url is currently http://timwise.dyndns.org/ but we'll see how that goes.

Journal Journal: a manual? for £££££?!

What kind of two bit fucked up piece of shit organisation expects you to *BUY* manuals for a product you have already paid for?!

Holy cow, that'd be canon.
"Selected User Manuals are available to purchase from Robert Scott..."
http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/User_Manuals/index.asp

Last fucking business they get from me.

And their support of linux consists of fingers in ears "la la la it doens't exist".

I'm going to try and get a refund for my printer and buy one from a company who cares about their customer's experience.

Wankers.

Journal Journal: comedy email circular

Thanks to our head of sales for this one:

=========================================

The Department of Transport has now devised a new scheme in order to identify poor drivers and give good drivers the opportunity to recognise them whilst driving.

For this reason as from the middle of May 2006 those drivers who are
found to be driving badly which includes:

    -overtaking in dangerous places;

    -hovering within one inch of the car in front;

    -stopping sharply;

    -speeding in residential areas;

    -pulling out without indication;

    -performing U turns inappropriately in busy high streets;

    -under taking on motorways and

    -taking up more than one lane in multi lane roads,

  These drivers will be issued with flags, white with a red cross,
signifying their inability to drive properly. These flags must be
clipped to a door of the car and be visible to all other drivers and
pedestrians.

Those drivers who have shown particularly poor driving skills will have
to display a flag on each side of the car to indicate their greater lack
of skill and general lower intelligence mindset to the general public.

Please circulate this to as many other motorists as you can so that
drivers and pedestrians will be aware of the meaning of these flags.

Journal Journal: Get with the (music) program - podsafe radio

I've been looking for a show to listen to for some time that has some decent music in it. Finally I've found one:
The podshow music rewind: http://rewind.podshow.com/
Check it out. This guy plays clips from all the podshows, showcasing the best new music from the podsafe music network.

I came across it thanks to Adam Curry http://curry.com/

Fyi: you can subscribe with:
iTunes (easy)
Juice (desiigned for the job) http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php
or bashpodder (quick & effective linux script) http://linc.homeunix.org:8080/scripts/bashpodder/ - my favourite
there's many more of course.

Journal Journal: bad websites

I didn't think this kind of thing still existed, let alone on a commercial site:
https://www.mytravelmoney.com/SiteBrowser.htm

So I sent them a rant :)

---------------
To: webmaster@mytravelmoney.com; webmaster@goingplaces.co.uk

http://www.goingplaces.co.uk/AniteNextPage.asp?p=HOLIDAYEXTRASHOME&s=162000990
https://www.mytravelmoney.com/SiteBrowser.htm

From your site:

        "The view this site you must use Internet Explorer 5.0 or later.

        You may download the latest version of Internet Explorer from the following URL:

        http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads"

This is unacceptable.

Haven't you heard of Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, Lynx, Safari? Or Linux? Or Macs? Or the W3C and the drive for standards? This kind of message makes your site look like it's stuck in the 80's. If you cannot design a site for more than one browser then you shouldn't be designing websites.
In case you hadn't guessed, I won't now be buying currency from you.

Journal Journal: gimp trouble

I like the gimp a lot, and have been trying out some tutorials. Then it started crashing whenever I created a new image! argh! So after a bit of searching and a pointer from a bug report I tried replacing the GTK+ installation I had obtained with gaim with a new one from the gimp installer page. One restart later, problem solved. I like open sauce. Closed source software companies don't tend to be keen on publishing problems, even when people have resolutions to offer.

A small insight into Tim's life.

Journal Journal: article: Windows rapidly approaching desktop usability!

There have been many articles on the merits of linux based systems from the perspective of windows users. Now the tables are turned in this excellently written article. If you have read previous "linux versus windows" tests you will recognise the style and approach, and how it affects the conclusions reached.
