we don't know much about openai's finances except that altman is most likely qualitatively and quantitatively inflating them every time he's asked. i wonder if legal liability with be an implicit cost on them that slows this train down. hopefully it will.

you missed the point, comrade. these kids are graduating into an insanely shitty entry-level job market. that's squarely due to AI. Schmidt is pitching some bullshit about a rocket ship that will shoot you into prosperity to kids who are now saddled with debt and fewer and fewer ways to pay it back. if you're an established professional, times are still tough, but nothing like a recent undergrad.

to say everyone will benefit from datacenters is misinformed at best and dishonest at worst. leaving the environmental impact aside for a moment, all this "economic boom" has done thus far is to hire transient labor, not local labor, to build these monstrosities. the big tech firms and the remoras the suck onto them are getting wealthy, but the rest of us are seeing record inflation and wages that don't keep up with that. Plus basically everyone's job is sort of on the the chopping block now. So yeah, a public dividend for causing environment damage and employment disruption would be great.

this is so awful. where is the last bastion of the people's interests? where is the government who is supposed to protect the people? we need real change here. we need to elect politicians who aren't afraid to put their finger in the chest of these hyperscalers and say i'm talking to you a$$hole.

using opus 4.6 i've noticed quite a bit of complex work done almost perfectly. things that used to take hours now done in seconds. i wasn't convinced before. now i am. it's truly remarkable and very unsettling.
