Comment the pleasures of counting (Score 2, Informative) 630

I really enjoyed this book when I was at that stage... http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=wUdtVHBr-OQC Really a book about operational research, but covers lots of maths in a really applied accessible way with examples from history (spread of cholera outbreaks, optimal fleet size to avoid submarines in WW2, enigma machine etc.) Lots of exercises, and each section is relatively self contained - so ideal for starting off the kind of short projects you are talking about. Highly recommended...

Slashdot's Disagree Mail 426

Everyone likes to belong to something. Whether it be for fun, a sense of belonging, or a need for attention, a group gives you a feeling of solidarity. Surrounding yourself with people that share common goals and ideas can be comforting. Sometimes however, you realize that you hate the people you've surrounded yourself with. Your religion doesn't allow you to read anything that has profanity or you've subscribed to Slashdot thinking you could learn more about hockey. This week's collection is composed of people who don't want to play, read, or be associated with us anymore. Read below to find out how bad they want out.

Reading Google Chrome's Fine Print 607

Much ink and many electrons are being spilled over Google's Chrome browser (discussed here twice in recent days): from deep backgrounders to performance benchmarks to its vulnerability to a carpet-bombing flaw. The latest angle to be explored is Chrome's end-user license agreement. It does not look consumer-friendly. "By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any content which you submit, post or display on or through, the services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the services and may be revoked for certain services as defined in the additional terms of those services."

Unsolicited Offer For My Personal Domain Name? 542

Batzerto writes "Last Friday I received an unsolicited email offer for my domain — click the link below for the message. Their company name matches my domain, but with a country-specific top level domain (.NL in this case). They do seem to be legitimately using the domain in their country. As for my usage, the domain is my last name(.COM) and I'm only really using it for email. I'm not really that attached to it other than the hassle of changing email addresses. There are other flavors of the domain available (.US for example) that would suit my purposes just fine. So, Slashdot veterans, I ask you, what should I do? I'm leery of making an offer and falling into someone's legal trap. I wouldn't mind getting a chunk of cash out of the deal though."

http://simplefit.org/ This program is based on crossfit principles (worth reading up on) but uses simple exercises that you can do in your house (no equipment). By geeks and for geeks! You easily track your performance and there is a supportive community. Great way to get started if you're not near a crossfit gym and all the olympic lifts looks a bit daunting.
