Yes raise the Gas tax. and the first thing that will go up will be food and commodities because farmers have to farm and truckers have to Deliver and the one consistent thing between them is that it takes fuel to do it. For a farmer fuel consumption is not measured in miles per gallon. its gallons per hour. for a farmer to prepare a field, plant it, spray it, harvest it and finally prepare it for winter the have to cover the same ground over and over again. they can't just say "Well gas went up this week guess I will have to put away the tractor." For truckers your goods have to be shipped to [put retail store name here] in order for you the consumer to have access to it. for a Truck it all depends on weight of the load and course that determines the amount of fuel burned per mile and the number gas station stops between point of origin and their destination. With current prices most Trucking companies are barely even staying a float. raise Gas Tax and the first thing will go will be the trucking industry followed by the farming industry. less food will be grown in the USA which means it will have to be imported and that is far more expense and of a far less quality. less truckers means less commodity available at your local retail and items on the internet will also go up due to the increase cost of shipping. you want recover this economy, a Gas Tax is the stupidest of ideas.

I am not surprised. A couple of years ago I worked for a network backbone company that provided the network access to various Internet Service Providers within the state. My job was Internet Technical Support for an number of these. One such provider offered a number of different internet services depending on the region of the state in which you lived. In one city they subcontracted through Qwest. How that worked was that they would use the Qwest network and equipment but they would provide their own techs to do the initial install and my office would provide the tech support. there was on occasion we had this customer call in because his DSL equipment kept failing. It turned out that he had no phone lines going into his home and so the Tech instead installed the DSL Modem/Wireless router under the wood deck behind his house and they required the home owner to only be able to connect through the wireless. Of course they did not install any kind of box to protect it with so every time it rain or snow the DSL stopped working. and they had to send the tech out to fix it. All the tech would do was replace the broken modem. This was likely not Qwest but some so called "Discount" Internet Service Provider that offer a service package that was probably "to good to be true." Now they are getting what they paid for. It is also possible that this is a temporary measure because the business demanded that they have internet right away but their build does not have a functional phone line for the DSL to run from so they had to connect direct from the Connection box outside. They might still come back and transfer everything inside as soon as they can resolve the issue that is keeping them from installing it inside. In many cases a tech may have to run a separate phone line for the DSL to prevent it from interfering with a fax or phone line as DSL introduces background static that will interfere with a fax machine even if the fax is connecting through a filter.

Comment Seeds cannot feed a Famine (Score 1) 115

A famine is the result of drastic environmental change that can be the result of or cause a taxation on the land to the point where it cannot sustain crops capable of feeding a large scale metropolis. the point is that in order to feed people you need to be able to grow enough food. seeds do not feed people, the produce from crops which take time is what feeds people. If the world wants to be able to protect against famine then they need to take preventive steps to do so. they could develop better land conservation practices, not isolationism. Develop more efficient water control and containment ensuring that during times of drought crops are getting only exactly the required amount needed to produce a good yield and no more. this story is in fact out of context anyway. the original purpose of this project was to preserve the genome in case of any number of disasters that would result in the failure to produce food because the seeds needed to do so are no longer available. radiation has been known to sterilize seeds usually in less hardy plants.

Just to make sure I understand... We grow grain with petroleum based fertilizers,

Actually that is not quite true. The majority of fertilizer is produced as byproduct of food processing or through the mining of potassium combined with nitrates to produce the commonly used product of potassium nitrate. the same chemical used at the Oklahoma City Bombing. it also primarily comes from the large quantities of cow manure produced at feed lots. most petrolium base products are the pesticides and herbicides used to keep the bugs and weeds out of the grain.

Patent Markings May Spell Trouble For Activision 82

eldavojohn writes "If you pick up your copy of Guitar Hero and read the literature, you'll notice it says 'patent pending' and cites a number of patents. A group alleges no such patent pends nor are some of the patents applicable. If a judge finds Activision guilty of misleading the public in this manner, they could become liable for up to $500 per product sold under false patent marking. The patents in question seem to be legitimately Guitar Hero-oriented, and little is to be found about the mysterious group. The final piece of the puzzle puts the filing in Texas Northern District Court, which might be close enough to Texas Eastern District Court to write this off as a new kind of 'false patent marking troll' targeting big fish with deep coffers."
