The comparison is made against MuseScore 1.3 which is more than 2y old. MuseScore 2.0 has been majorly improved on its default engraving quality.

Korea, and learning about the accessibility problems faced by classical musicians who cannot see, MuseScore is planning to radically increase the number of Braille scores available, to make them easier to find, and affordable to acquire. This effort is an extension to the Open Well-Tempered Clavier project, and will involve the creation of a free web-service that bridges the gap between open source MuseScore and MusicXML-to-Braille libraries. It also involves converting the 50,000 scores on MuseScore.com into Braille, and making the website more accessible to blind and vision impaired visitors. Why is this important? For every 100 scores that are available in a traditional music catalog, only one will be available as Braille for blind musicians.

It's open source because the recording comes with the sheet music in an open digital format. Compare it the source of a picture, which is light. The source of classical music is the musical score.

rDouglass writes: The Open Goldberg Variations team has launched a new project to make an open source, public domain version of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. The work is significant because of it's enormous influence on musicians and composers throughout history. A new studio recording, a new digital MuseScore score (with support for MusicXML and MIDI), as well as all source materials (multitrack WAV, lossless FLAC) will be provided as libre and gratis downloads. New to the project are publisher GRIN Verlag, as well as record label PARMA Recordings. GRIN and PARMA will produce and distribute the physical score and double CD, even though the digital versions are to be widely available and in the public domain. Their enthusiasm for the project runs counter to the general publishing and music industry's fear of digital file sharing, and shows growing momentum for finding new models to make free music commercially sustainable.

Lilypond does not have MusicXML export, so anything you make in Lilypond is not exportable via the sheet music exchange standard.
This is different for this project: you get the Goldberg Variations in MuseScore source format and MusicXML, and many other formats (pdf, midi, ...)
So whatever notation software you use (MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, ...), you'll be able to import the Goldberg score and adapt it to your needs.

The works are released under the Creative Commons Zero license to promote the broadest possible free use of the works. The score underwent two rounds of public peer review, drawing on processes normally applied to open source software. Furthermore, the demands of Bach's notational style drove significant advancements in the MuseScore open source project. The recording was made on a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial piano in the Teldex Studio of Berlin. Anne-Marie Sylvestre, a Canadian record producer, was inspired by the project and volunteered her time to edit and produce the recording. The project was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign that was featured on Slashdot in March 2011."
