I just finished watching the original Connections series with James Burke.

The start and end of the series hits it home:
The dependence on technology, and the use of technology to get us out of trouble created by technology.

About how one technology is so interdependent on other technology, that one failure can cause the whole technology section to fail.
Initial reference to electricity grid failures, usual caused by one small part failing)

Wouldn't building a system so that one part cannot take down all the other parts be important?

How would the Internet be if the entire thing would fail if one part stopped?

GDC - Ron Moore Keynote 180

Ronald Moore may have done a lot for the Trek series of shows, but recently he's been making new fans with his work on the Battlestar Galactica title. He was invited to speak at GDC to relate ways in which intelligent folks can adapt an existing franchise. He focused on not only adapting and improving the original, but maintaining the core goodness of the inspiring work. Read on for notes from his talk. Yahoo! Messenger Gets Phone Service 92

prostoalex writes to tell us that Yahoo! has launched a new phone service attached to their Messenger service. From the article: "The calls have to be initiated from a PC, but can be made to traditional landline phones and cellphones. Yahoo customers can receive calls from those phones, as well. Yahoo will charge 2 cents a minute for domestic calls, on top of the monthly $2.99 fee. Per-minute charges to 180 other countries will vary. It won't charge to receive calls."

GDC - Sony Keynote 172

In San Jose, the first big keynote finished up delivery about twenty minutes ago. Phil Harrison from Sony laid out some of the future plans the company has for the games industry on the whole. The PS3 featured heavily, of course, but new announcements centered on the PlayStation Network and online functionality.
