Submission + - GM Working on Interactive Windshields (wired.com)

this_boat_is_real writes: Rather than project info onto a portion of the windshield, GM’s latest experiment uses the entire windshield as a display. Small ultraviolet lasers project data gleaned from sensors and cameras onto the glass. General Motors geeks are working alongside researchers from several universities to develop a system that integrates night vision, navigation and on-board cameras to improve our ability to see — and avoid — problems, particularly in adverse conditions like fog.

Comment Something About Holding a Book in Your Hands (Score 1) 390

Wow. Some really interesting (and funny) comments. I agree with those people that said that there's just something about holding a book in your hands and flipping the pages that adds to the experience. Although, admittedly, I have read e-books and have still had the experience of being captivated despite the lack of flipping. Actually, I work for an e-book company and have had lots of exposure to them and their industry. So what I find really funny is this: I see book covers every single day on our site (kobobooks.com) and I remember that for several months we had The Lost Symbol on our front page. One day, one of my coworkers actually brought in a hard copy of the book. I was totally winded when I saw the thickness of that book. LOL. I had never seen that book in 3 dimensions before and seeing it for the first time like that completely took me away. It's not that interesting, I know, but I was like "holy crap; I had no idea it was this thick". LOL.

Submission + - Pharma Faces a Character Count Conundrum (nature.com)

this_boat_is_real writes: There’s growing concern over how pharmaceutical companies use social media and the Internet to market their products. Last November, the US Food and Drug Administration held a hearing on the topic, and many were worried over how marketing mediums such as Twitter — which has a 140-character limit on text — can sufficiently disclose drug risks. Submission + - Awesome Underwater Robot Lost At Sea (nature.com)

this_boat_is_real writes: Somewhere off the coast of Chile a pioneering underwater robot named Abe lies in a watery grave today. The Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) was one of the first truly independent research submersibles, being both unmanned and un-tethered to its launching ship. While on its 222nd research dive on Friday all contact with the craft was lost, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has announced.
