Boston University Working On LED Wireless Networks 179

Madas writes "This article on Absolute Gadget details how researchers at Boston University's College of Engineering are working on devloping wireless networks that use LED lights instead of normal radio waves. This research apparently has other uses in the automobile industry. Apparently the LEDs could warn you if the driver in front has put the brakes on so could avoid hitting the car in front. Personally, I'd use the vision balls that are in my thought box."

How Mobile Phones Work Behind the Scenes 220

adamengst writes "We seldom think about how our mobile phones actually work, but in this TidBITS article, Rich Mogull pulls back the covers and peels away the jargon to explain why text messages work when voice calls are dropped, why your battery lasts longer in some places than in others, why you're not allowed to use phones on airplanes, why you can be notified of a voicemail message when your phone never rang, and more."

Submission + - What's the best way to teach myself math? 4

An anonymous reader writes: I have a secret. In high school I failed two out of three years of math classes and eventually dropped out of school completely. Although dropping out was the most foolish thing I have ever done, I am not dumb. I earned my general equivalency diploma as soon as was legally possible and from there went on to college and beyond. That was many years ago and my most basic algebra, trigonometry, and geometry skills are slipping away at an alarming rate. I'm looking for a self-guided course covering the equivalent of 4 years of high school mathematics including calculus. My math skills are holding me back. How can I turn this around?

Here's my setup:

Tivo, 80 hour version, hooked up to the 5.1 reciever.

Wireless 802.11b access via a linksys USB nic - hooked up to the tivo.

D-Link wireless router, hooked up to the server as well as the internet connection.

CentOSrunning on the server. JavaHMO loaded on the server as well

With this setup, the music is automatically browsable so long as the server is on and functional. All one has to do is select 'music and pictures' within the tivo menu, and volia - all of the cd's, ripped, sorted by directory.

As an added bonus, there's the DVR functionality there as well. Parents, even older ones, can appreciate that (they may not with an xbox).
