The reason Amazon is said to be responsible is because Amazon cannot find the maker or distributor of the item. Someone has to be responsible - according to the courts - and that only leaves Amazon. If your Ford burst into flames you would sue Ford and not the dealership because you can locate and sue the Ford company. Same with Lowe's, if your Black and Decker exploded you would sue B&D - and not Lowe's - because you are able to find and sue B&D.
