So here we are stuck with an inefficient solution dictated by a less than magnanimous industrial "hero" . Just because he was first to market does not mean it is a winning solution. Batteries would logically be more effective if we drove up to the battery station and the battery was swapped out . This model makes for less loss of jobs , "gas" stations are everywhere and they are good places for these swap stations. Let Musk stew while a new model for ICE cars are eclipsed by new tech without throwing all the public funding behind a charging tech that is inefficient and controlled by the first to market.
I have seen some blow up drawings of new Tesla models that make the battery pack part of the cars frame design , engineeringly efficient but batteries are rigidly fixed to the car thus the battery swap model would probably not work for this type of design nor would harvesting partially depleted batteries for large scale storage systems that don't need to go anywhere and cover nite time load leveling when solar isn't available.
This battery swap model exists and the Chinese are issuing cars in the swappable battery design .. The common good seems to get trumped by the biggest bucks again. Too many renters and not enough extension cords.
