I agree that Mint is the way to go. I loaded Mint Cinnamon 21 on a 2008 core duo white macbook, a 2011 13" air, and a 2015 11" air and for every one of them everything worked right out of the box (after saying yes to proprietary wifi driver), including having the screen brightness and audio control keys work. Couldn't be happier. They all run really well, low resources, snappy response.
