These statistics seem to a be a bit flawed. Windows has 90% of the market, Mac OS X has 9%, and Linux has 1%. However, Linux is heavily used in servers, handhelds, and other devices. Not to mention, the fact that there is no way reliable way to track Linux installs (100s of dstributions with users installing everywhere and no phoning home to report it).

I don't think this statistic is meaningful. I think Linux should keep chugging along and show the world that freedom, volunteers, and good will can equal money. Something to tip the scales...

Has MySQL Forked Beyond Repair? 334

snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister questions the effect recent developments in the MySQL community will have on MySQL's future in the wake of Oracle's acquisition of Sun. Even before Oracle announced its buyout, there were signs of strain within the MySQL community, with key MySQL employees exiting and forks of the MySQL codebase arising, including Widenius' MariaDB. Now Widenius' Oracle-less Open Database Alliance adds further doubt as to which branch of MySQL will be considered 'official' going forward. 'Forks are a fact of life in the open source community, and arguably an entirely healthy one,' McAllister writes. 'Oracle just better hope it doesn't end up on the wrong side of the fork.' To do so, he suggests Oracle will have to regain the the trust and support of the MySQL community — in other words, 'stop acting like Oracle.'"

Rutgers Attempts Robot Atlantic Crossing 67

RUCOOL writes "Rutgers University students and staff launched a Slocum glider AUV in an attempt to be the first such vehicle to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Progress so far is good, but it will be a long 6- to 9-month journey. Status as well as other information can be tracked here. Media links can be found in the lower left section of page, among images, and storyline blogs." And Google Earth fans can track the vehicle's progress, too.

I like the look, I like the layout, now lets just hope that it follows through as intended. If so, this could be a great resource for both experienced pros as well as new users.

I like the new look too.

Hopefully Linux.com amounts to something more useful than a news aggregator.

Maybe it could host video and image tutorials on how to use popular Linux distributions. That would be helpful for new users as I often have to sit down with them and explain Linux and how to use it. Then I start getting calls at odd hours of the night on how to install programs or why a certain program isn't working.

The one time I actually RTFA, the article is fail.

As other commenters have pointed out, the article is inaccurate, and the numbers and ranks they are basing they're crazy conclusions on do no even match they're own raw data.

Oh well, back to Nethack to find that amulet. (Actually, I should probably consider sleeping... nawww, that can wait. The Amulet of Yendor is much more important.)

I don't reboot. I carry my laptop on Suspend with me everywhere. I never reboot unless I am upgrading my kernel.

Those are my specs, so I'm always maxing out my RAM and swap thanks to Firefox. When that happens, I kill Firefox and just drop down to a terminal and play Nethack while my system purges itself.

Comment Microsoft doesn't need this. (Score 0) 343

Give it to someone more deserving, like small business. Like the summary said, this is just pocket change for Microsoft.

I would say something about Microsoft being more interested about building bridges and software, but I wouldn't be surprised if they fail at this too. It seems everything Microsoft builds has shaky foundations. XP
