Comment Re:Greed (Score 1) 93

There has never been, nor will there ever be, any society, or indeed any species of life form, that is not driven forward by advantage, greed and exploitation. It's pointless to be aggrieved over your position, as long as you have equal opportunity. Altruism is great to a point, up until it becomes self-destructive and life moves on ungratefully without you.

Comment They're all Superman now (Score 1) 226

I got burned out when virtually every character has acquired a complete array of powers similar to Superman. We've got Wonder Woman flying through the air shooting lasers, we've got Spiderman flying through the air holding up cruise ships and bridges, we've even got the Kingsman getting thrown across the room into a wall multiple times with zero scratches. They're all Superman, they're all limitless, and that makes them all super boring.

Comment Flattery bad? (Score 1) 339

Cultural appropriation is usually flattering and it's no different here. The tribe would generally take the naming as respect. I don't suspect the complainants are representative of the entire tribe. This seems more like a power grab to see who can force someone else to do something. Which if they succeed, they further isolate the tribe from society, so it's ironic and selfish.

Comment Ending DST is a bad idea (Score 3, Insightful) 290

I'm gratified that this misguided bill has fallen by the wayside. Those senators are foolishly repeating history based on a populist idea. Eliminating DST has been tried and failed several times in our history. The start and length of our day does change radically with the seasons, and if we don't compensate the consequences are worse than having to adjust clocks. It's easy enough to read about the history of everyone whining about it, and of having to bring it back when reality sets in. Go ahead and do that before jumping on the bandwagon.

Comment Don't waste it (Score 5, Interesting) 273

It's incredibly short-sighted to bury nuclear waste in a manner that makes it difficult to retrieve. There are already new designs for safe reactors that can burn the waste as fuel to get out the remaining 95% of energy not extracted by the legacy reactors. It's crazy to pick a solution for the next 300,000 years when in the next 50 years we'll have much better ideas what to do with spent fuel, and in the next 100 years humanity will be utterly unrecognizable.

Comment CFL = reduced quality of life (Score 1) 400

I replaced two 60W incandescents in my computer room with two 23W "100W equivalent" CFLs. I expected to save a lot of power while increasing the light output from 120W to 200W equivalent. Instead I find that the lighting is dim and creates a depressing environment in the room. I couldn't conceive of replacing all the bulbs throughout my house. This leads me to believe the energy equivalence is a bunch of hype at best, and outright dishonesty at worst, and that efforts to outlaw incandescents are severely misguided and premature. Switching to CFL represents a quality of life reduction. I'm hoping LEDs ultimately turn out to be a better solution.
