Actually there are LinModems device drivers
for Linux. Look in ax.25 device drivers, you'll
see some soundmodems that could cope with
the most used amateur packet radio modulation.
They work and are useful for a portable installation.
FYI a 9600 baud Z-80 based TNC is about $200,
a Xlinix-based 'tnc' is about $30.
A soundmodem is about $0.
A 85230 serial card with 9600 is also under $200-
$300.
So for Joe DXer a soundmodem is good.
