Comment Other particles? (Score 2) 23

Microplastics embedded in our bodies are certainly concerning, but I have to ask if there are other, more natural, particles that exhibit similar properties? Volcanic dust? Microparticles of silica sand? I've seen numerous studies on microplastics, but none that compare the effects to similar-sized particles of foreign material.

Comment Crashplan (Score 1) 283

I've stuck with Crashplan from Code42 even after they dropped the home users. I now use the Business edition with a single user that backs up everything from my QNAP NAS. Periodically, I make a secondary backup of critical files and store that in my safe deposit box at the bank. I go get it about once a quarter to update the files in case of an emergency.

Sony Gets Nasty With PSBreak Buyers 246

YokimaSun writes "The war between hackers and Sony over the PlayStation 3 has now taken an even more sinister turn, with Sony going after not just shops but actual buyers of the PSBreak dongle, threatening them with fines of many thousands of Euros and forcing them to sign cease-and-desist letters. It seems Sony will use any means necessary to thwart both homebrew and piracy on the PS3."

Today's Children Are Officially Potty Mouths 449

tetrahedrassface writes "When the Sociolinguistics Symposium met earlier this month swearing scholar Timothy Jay revealed that an increase in child swearing is directly related to an increase in adult swearing. It seems that vulgarity is increasing as pop culture continues to popularize vulgarities. The blame lies with media, public figures, politicians, but mostly ourselves. From the article: 'Children as young as two are now dropping f-bombs, with researchers reporting that more kids are using profanity — and at earlier ages — than has been recorded in at least three decades.'"

0 A.D. Goes Open Source 88

DoubleRing writes "Wildfire Games has announced that it will be moving its previously closed development process for 0 A.D. to open source. All code will be released under the GPL and all art under CC-BY-SA. 0 A.D. is a historically-based RTS, and while it's not yet complete, this trailer is purportedly actual gameplay footage. With a codebase of over 150k lines of C++ code plus 25k lines in development tools, this is looking like a fairly promising entrant into the open source RTS field. The screenshots are definitely pretty, to say the least."

DHS To Kill Domestic Satellite Spying Program 150

mcgrew writes "The Bush administration had plans in place to use spy satellites to spy on American citizens. This morning the AP reports that new DHS head Janet Napolitano has axed those plans. 'The program was announced in 2007 and was to have the Homeland Security Department use overhead and mapping imagery from existing satellites for homeland security and law enforcement purposes. The program, called the National Applications Office, has been delayed because of privacy and civil liberty concerns. The program was included in the Obama administration's 2010 budget request, according to Rep. Jane Harman, a California Democrat and House homeland security committee member who was briefed on the department's classified intelligence budget.'"

Comment Re:MythTV increasingly impractical (digital and HD (Score 1) 254

bah! With OTA HDTV capture cards available, those of us who don't spend a fortune every month to the cable gods get great 1080i picture with all the MythTV bells and whistles. Yes, digital cable or satellite TV makes it more difficult to use MythTV, but for those who don't have to have 200+ channels of mostly crap can do just fine with MythTV and 5-10 channels of mostly crap.
