In 2024 UCSD had 34000 undergrads. 900 of them stink at math. They are legally obligated to admit kids from shit school districts to try and lift folks out of poverty.
For those of us who are ratio challenged, that's about 1 in 40 kids. The remainder are pulled from the top few %ile in grades and coursework from every school.

When I graduated HS in the mid-90s the highest level of math kids could take was the equivalent of 1 semester of college level calculus. Schools did not offer statistics. Now kids can take stats and two semesters of college calculus. Plus, most kids who apply to UCs are taking dual enrollment courses at their local community college.

The top end of kids entering college are definitely more prepared, course-wise, than the majority of their parents were 30 years ago. The debate should be about setting those 900 kids up for failure by admitting them into a UC before they're ready. Money would probably be better spent giving them a stipend to go to community college for two years.

Medieval Copy Protection 226

An anonymous reader writes "In medieval times a 'book curse' was often included on the inside cover or on the last leaf of a manuscripts, warning away anyone who might do the book some harm. Here's a particularly pretty one from Yale's Beinecke MS 214: 'In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. In the one thousand two hundred twenty-ninth year from the incarnation of our Lord, Peter, of all monks the least significant, gave this book to the [Benedictine monastery of the] most blessed martyr, St. Quentin. If anyone should steal it, let him know that on the Day of Judgment the most sainted martyr himself will be the accuser against him before the face of our Lord Jesus Christ.'"

Lego 'CubeDudes' By PIXAR Animator 34

An anonymous reader writes "PIXAR Animator Angus MacLane has created an incredible series of LEGO 'CubeDudes' modeled after beloved characters from sci-fi movies and comic books. From Star Wars heroes R2D2 and C-3PO to Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, the pixellated creations bear a remarkable likeness to their forebears. MacLane says, 'When I had a moment here and there I chip away at a few at a time. I'll have the body of one Dude and a head of another that I will be working on at the same time. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to make one CubeDude and I average about two a day.' The hardest part is the color palette — LEGO doesn't make purple bricks, so villains like Lex Luthor, The Joker, and Grimace are a challenge."
