How 'The Big Bang Theory' Normalized Nerd Culture (newyorker.com) 375

Last week, the last episode of the final season of "The Big Bang Theory" was broadcasted on CBS. Say what you will about the show, but one thing is clear: it was popular. While the average episode in Season 11 received over 18.6 million views, the season finale ended its run with an audience of 23.44 million viewers. The New Yorker's Neima Jahromi reflects on the show and how it "normalized nerd culture": On Thursday night, "The Big Bang Theory" closed out its run with an audience of eighteen million viewers. Despite all the cast changes, Sheldon remained emphatically misanthropic, self-centered, and alienated. In the end, the reason he became a kind of dweeby Fonz has to do with the structural tendencies of the oft-dismissed multi-camera sitcom. Such shows extract empathy in real time. With a live audience, silence is not an option: if a joke or a scene doesn't land, if real people aren't feeling it, then the writers storm the soundstage and change it. Alienated characters, who are the least likely to garner empathy, require extra attention from writers, and therefore often gravitate toward the center of a show. As a result, viewers come halfway, too. It's unlikely that a curmudgeonly Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or an uptight Alex P. Keaton on "Family Ties" will remain detestable for long, even if their creators did set them up to be antagonists. Eventually, audiences saw that Sheldon was as befuddled by the world as they were uncomprehending of his intellectual pursuits. They also learned that he hated change as much as they did. In this way, an outmoded form of television cushioned the anxiety of the brave new tech culture for a generation. How do you feel about the ending of The Big Bang Theory?

when zoning change favors city and not the residents. Here in Toronto, they would hide a small sign somewhere in the bushes of a nice little park. The sign would say "A small to negligible zoning change has been proposed, be at the city hall to debate the issue at 2:18AM of October the 2@ (coincidentally first or second digit hard to make out usually), in Nunavut. Of course no one shows up to the stupid meeting. Three weeks later, boom, park is cut down and cement is poured for a 98 story condo building.

Especially when you OC the card to the tits, and then launch 3D mark or something else to test stability, the whine in the middle of a quiet night would be extremely apparent. As someone else above said, feels like you are about to pop a capacitor or two.

Last year went backpacking through Europe. Brought nothing but my Sony RX100 and my GS4 plus some clothing and a wad of cash. Using a MicroSD in RX100 (with adapter) and being able to put the same SD into GS4 to edit the photos I like and upload to Gdrive or equivalent was an amazing feature. I first also notice that battery used easily last me entire day of fairly heavy use (for my purposes). Now it dies at 6pm. Bought another battery on amazon for 15 bucks, and bam now lasts like it used to again. You charge the battery daily, how many charge cycles does it have before it shows signs of wear? The formula is simple. 5" phone, minimum bazel (this is not 1960s FFS), MicroSD, user replacable battery, 3/4GB ram, vinila android, plus some nice bells and whistles like nice camera, fast proc/GPU, and you have yourself a solid phone. Yet all these companies are like retarded midgets doing stupid shit. sony is trying to make the biggest possible bazels on the planet (WTG Champs), HTC thinks key to success not only huge bazels but also the shittiest android incarnation ever, etc.

Pale Moon all the way. I was a diehard FF fan, but once they took out my ability to not display images, that was the last straw. I went to check out FF forums, and dozens of people were complaining about this feature being removed, and FF had the nerve to say that the correct way of dealing with this was editing per site preferences. Burn in hell FF.
