Yes, you can absolutely run your own router. I highly recommend looking into PFsense or OPNsense to use as your layer 3 device. Grab a managed switch and a access point(s) and you have a nice network. Switch and AP wise, Microtik makes some great hardware for a very competitive price.

I cannot comment how good it is, or even if the features have a 1:1 parody, but in light of Plex seemingly phoning home, some admins may opt for a fully open source solution. It takes around 15 minutes to spin up a docker container. Might give it a try in the coming days to 1v1 it with Plex.

Along with this news, Microsoft also announced Windows 11 LTSC, which looks pretty interesting. I have a client that legitimately deploys LTSC on pinhole secure access systems so it will be cool to play around with when they choose to update them.
