Submission + - Intel to buy smartphone chipmaker Infineon for $2B 1

sylverboss writes: Intel Corp., the world’s largest chipmaker, is close to an agreement to buy Infineon Technologies AG’s wireless business, three people with direct knowledge of the discussions said. When it comes to desktop, laptop and server chips, Intel’s pretty much got a lock on the market but everyone can see the writing on the wall: mobile chips and architectures are the future of computing thanks to the popularity of smartphones, but Intel doesn’t have anything to offer in that regard. sylverboss writes: Acquisition of Motorola's mobile network infrastructure business gives Nokia an entry to the U.S. market, where it has long struggled. After several months of failing to break itself up, Motorola finally succeeded Monday as it sold off most of its mobile network infrastructure unit for $1.2 billion to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). Submission + - Cisco Launching Blade Servers (minutetraders.com)

minutetraders writes: "According to some sources, by next year Cisco Systems will be in the blade server business. ChannelWeb has a story confirmed by several sources, here and here that the San Jose, Calif.-based networking behemoth is readying blade servers, code-named California, for a release early next year. A blade server offering would pit Cisco in direct competition against the likes of Dell, HP and IBM, companies it partners with on their respective blade server offerings" for control of the enterprise data center."
