The publishing industry (newspapers, magazines) gets most of its revenue from advertising. Once online advertising matures and becomes a more stable and predictable revenue source, perhaps these content sites will show they can stay afloat. I think, like publishing however, they will need some sort of subscription based revenue to do it, so we'll see if the internet community balks or not at having to pay for some of these now free services (IM, online gaming, news).
I agree that ISPs are currently in the best position to lock in the additional revenue needed to survive as content providers.
